IEM Cologne 2024: Recap

From Spirit's shock exit to SAW's Cinderella run, IEM Cologne 2024 was full of surprises - and what a great grand final we had!

IEM Cologne 2024: Recap

Such a beautiful event. So much to unpack. I'm not going to go game-by-game to avoid wasting your time. I'll just list a few personal comments and peak moments/games.

  • Spirit were the first to get eliminated (lost to The MongolZ and then G2 (in a really, really dominant game) - WHAT?).
  • paiN did pretty well and Virtus.pro did pretty badly.
  • Liquid almost made it, but lost to FaZe after the comeback of a lifetime - a win that got them to the playoffs.
  • G2 lost its first game to SAW (click here to read more about the story of SAW until the playoffs - glorious).

The 6 teams that got to the playoffs were:

  • SAW, which were facing FaZe
  • G2, which were facing MOUZ
  • Na'Vi (facing the winner of G2 vs MOUZ) and Vitality (facing the winner of SAW vs FaZe) - both were straight into the semi-finals

First: SAW vs FaZe

  • Close-ish game, but SAW ended up edging out FaZe (please check out this clutch from MUTIRis).

MUTIRis 1v4 Cluch vs FaZe

G2 vs MOUZ

  • MOUZ just played better, I really don't know what to tell you - was hoping for more from G2.

Semi-finals

Vitality vs SAW

  • Unfortunately, everything good has to come to an end.
  • Vitality dominated SAW and ended this "Cinderella run". Such great CS played by SAW up until this point - really proud of them.

Na'Vi vs MOUZ

  • Close game, but Na'Vi ended up taking it.

And the finals...

If you don't yet know who won, please go watch the series. It was soooo entertaining.

  • Na'Vi vs Vitality - truly the best finals we could have gotten.
  • Wow. I mean ZywOo popped off, apEX popped off. Such a close game and what a great map of Mirage to end Na'Vi's streak of 12 wins there (I'm pretty sure it was 12).
  • Once again, wow. I was rooting for Na'Vi but yeah, Vitality really did deserve a title this year - and what a way to do it!

The full, uncut grand finals for all the chills.

The highlights of the grand finals, if you don't have ~6 hours to spare.
